Chatham County records are divided among these official custodians:
- Court case files: see criminal court case records, or contact the clerk of the court that heard the case
- Criminal records and rap sheets: contact the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC)
- Arrest, booking, and jail records: contact the Chatham County sheriff's records unit
- Official background checks: order through the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC)
- Police reports and incident records: contact the agency that wrote the report
- Record restriction and court sealing: follow the GBI process and contact the prosecutor or court that handled the case

The Criminal History/Fingerprint Unit publishes 912-652-7650 for its GCIC name-search procedure. Court copies come from the Superior Court Criminal Division, 400 W. Oglethorpe Avenue, Suite 178, Savannah, GA 31401, at 912-434-8920. Confirm current hours and request rules with the office before visiting.
